The Nyamai Zam is a cantilevered covered bridge that spans the Paro Chu, providing access to Rinpung Dzong. The bridge has been reconstructed, as the  original bridge was washed away in a flood in 1969.  In earlier eras, the bridge was built so that portions could be removed in times of war, protecting Rinpung Dzong from enemy attack. A beautiful link in time, decorations on the bridge include ceiling paintings and wall paintings of Buddhist symbols and personages. Two prayer wheels are considerately embedded in the walls at each of the two entrances to the bridge. Exposed  handles encourage passersby to turn them, sending good energy into the ethers. An elegant walkway leads from the level of the dzong to the rivers edge, an easy walk to the opposite side of the river.
